Carol and Louis Owens

Louis F. Owens Jr. was born in Columbia, South Carolina and spent his childhood years in Virginia. After graduating from high school, he earned a bachelor's degree from Duke University and a medical degree and his specialty training from the Medical College of Virginia. He is certified in diagnostic radiology by the American Board of Radiology.

After 14 years of active duty and six years on reserve duty, Dr. Owens retired as a colonel with the U.S. Air Force Reserves. During those years, he worked as a flight surgeon and a radiologist.

Since 1984, Dr. Louis Owens has been employed by Nanticoke Memorial Hospital in Seaford, Delaware as a diagnostic radiologist. Currently chairman of the hospital's Radiology Department, he is a past president of the medical staff and has held other leadership positions. He also is a member of various medical organizations.

Carol A. Owens grew up in Harrington, Delaware. She earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Delaware and her medical degree from the Medical College of Virginia. She is board certified in general pediatrics and developmental pediatrics.

Currently, Dr. Carol Owens is a senior public health physician with the State Division of Public Health and also a pediatrician with the Child Development Watch Program.

As an active member in her church, Dr. Owens has participated in various mission trips to other countries, both as a missionary and in her role as a pediatrician. In 2006 she and her husband traveled with Caring Partners International to the Ukraine. While there, she presented to health care professionals in that country about the care of disabled or handicapped children.

Associated with Delaware Tech for many years, Dr. Louis Owens is a Sussex County member of the college's board of trustees and serves as chairman of the Owens Campus Educational Foundation Development Council. Dr. Carol Owens currently serves on the board of a church organization which offers temporary shelter and counseling to women and children who are facing difficult times.

While Dr. Louis Owens came to know Delaware Tech through his association with its students doing clinical rotations in the hospital, it was through personal experience that he and his wife became more knowledgeable about the role the college plays in student success. Their two daughters were students in the high school Academic Challenge program on campus, and both doctors credit that program for their daughters' writing skills and preparation for college.

Dr. Louis Owens considers it an honor to serve in his roles for the college and has long been a loyal supporter and advocate. Both he and Dr. Carol Owens are, and have been, generous financial supporters of the annual gala, Starry, Starry Night. They feel strongly that their financial support does make a difference in the lives of Delaware Tech students, the opportunities available at the college, and in the future of our county and state.

For Dr. Carol and Dr. Louis Owens, making a difference at Delaware Tech is a joy; for Delaware Tech, having such caring and generous friends is a joy and privilege.
